We are grateful to Mrs. Francis, a science teacher at Upton Middle School for receiving a grant to purchase a pair of glasses for every student in SJ Schools. I think it is a memory our children will hold on to and enjoy retelling. I hope your child came home full of excitement and was able to tell you all about it. On Thursday your child came home with a bound book that he/she helped to illustrate and create. We typically head out of town, but stayed home this year. Even though the weather was not great, we had a good week connecting with people we've been missing and getting quite a bit done around our home. I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and sharing stories and adventures we had during the break. Your child will love telling you all about the Sesame Street video, the constellation exploration and the really cool light show we saw. We began the skills of Comparing and Contrasting last week. We compared/contrasted pairs of students each day finding ways they are the same (compare) and different (contrast). This can be done with any 2 objects. Have your child show you how to do this at home. They may even be able to show you using a Venn Diagram. We have been junior meteorologists as we predict the weather each day. We have been graphing each day this month as either a lion or a lamb day on our March calendars. Ask your child what each means in regard to the weather. In math we have been learning different strategies for counting large numbers of things accurately. Give your child a handful of pennies, beans or whatever you find to count. See if he/she is able to show you different ways to count them correctly. It was neat to be in the high school where all the big kids go to school. Some of us even know some of those big kids and hoped to see them. Unfortunately (or fortunately) they were all in class learning. We learned why we "Spring" our clocks forward in early March each year. Ask your child to do some predicting regarding things at home. We have had fun predicting weather, school activities and what may happen next in stories we are reading. We learned why our calendar includes February 29th every 4 years last week. Ask your child how long it really takes the earth to revolve around the sun and why that creates the need for an additional day every 4 years. Last week finished our 2nd trimester of kindergarten.
